Get the Look! Acrylic Link Bracelets As Seen In The Sartorialist!”

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

We’re not ones to brag and boast, our glamorous baby boomer style usually does all of the talking.  But when the occasion calls for it we’re not afraid to be the ones to “start spreading the news.” After all, we are a boutique Off Broadway!

Recently we came across a posting in another one of our favorite street style blogs The Sartorialist and we couldn’t believe our eyes!  Bracelets featured from one of our jewelry designer staples Angela Caputi on his November 2nd posting “On the Street…Viv, Milano.”  No sooner did we find ourselves ordering more as the requests piled up.  In our 42 years we pride ourselves in having strong relationships with some of the oldest and best designers in the business, and as the style saavy do, we always make sure to keep our eyes open for up-and-coming designers so we are constantly bringing you a well-edited selection for women over 50.

Now after you order your own set of Acrylic Link bracelets (featured in  Amber and Ocre) don’t forget to take a look at the rest of our Angela Caputi collection - we promise you won’t regret it!

Why Bother Dressing Well?

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

When Off Broadway Boutique and Lynn Dell first stumbled upon 365daysofstyle.com we were in love!  We live for glamour and style, we celebrate the forty plus and baby-boomers confident in their aesthetic, we believe in looking and feeling our best always, and yes Heather Marie Claus’ 365daysofstyle.com brings you all of that and more.

In particular we are most excited about the “weekly lessons” -  an on-going project which gathers real women to discuss questions about style.  As Lynn Dell, Owner and Countess of Glamour, loves to share her passion for style we thought this was a perfect opportunity.   After serving as a fashion commentator at hotels and benefits in addition to hosting her own successful fashion television show for 10 years, she truly knows a thing or two about style!

This week she answers the question: Why Bother Dressing Well?  See how she did and tell us what you think!

“I went to a mahvelous party…” Noel Coward

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Last night, Off Broadway Boutique and www.womanaroundtown.com co-hosted, Spring is in the Air, a celebration of the season and of decorous fabulous 40+ women who are, or will become, our valued friends and clientele.  Cheese, fruit, munchies, and wine were offered to appreciative women who shopped in each other’s friendly company… often trying on clothing or hats, asking strangers to vouch an opinion.  Sisterhood was apparent.  For those first discovering the boutique, the wealth of attractive, stylish possibilities seemed inspiring.  More than one suggested she felt as if she was being let loose in a candy store.

The remarkable Deborah Newallo and her able musicians captivated those in attendance.  Recognizing one another as women of a certain sympathetic glamour, owner Lynn Dell and Deborah Newallo met as strangers and struck up a conversation.  Upon learning Deborah was an experienced jazz singer, Lynn enlisted her, unheard, for the party.  Class and presence would certainly manifest themselves in her musicianship. And they did.  Ms. Newallo stands just to the left of Billie Holiday, in the vicinity of Lee Wiley, yet very much in her own territory.  Her arrangements served her confident voice and the classic songs, her sidemen were top notch.  This was music worthy of a fine supper club.

Karen E. Seiger then signed copies of her terrific book: Markets of New York City: A Guide to the Best Artisan, Farmer, Food and Flea Markets, which features Off Broadway Boutique and is published by The Little Bookroom…as we participate in the 77th and Columbus Flea Market on Sundays. You’re always welcome to visit us every Sunday.  A comprehensive and beautifully illustrated little volume, the book is indispensable for those of us full-figured women who love exploring when we shop.

Discount cards for the wine bar at the splendid new SD26 (contemporary Italian cuisine at 26th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues) and for Seven’s Mediterranean Turkish Grill across the street from the shop, were offered to our guests.  Additionally, we offered entrance in a free raffle that featured prizes of lunches, dinners, teas, accessories and books.  All our fantastic fifty-plus winners will be notified.

Familiar faces mingled with new ones as we were happy to welcome Charlene Gianetti and the Women Around Town, as well as those who accompanied friends.  Maryann Van Dongen, Lina Piloplyte and Jenny Hirscowitz were instantly recognizable as denizens of Ari Cohen’s extremely fashionable web site, www.advancedstyle.blogspot.com. Their unique taste and individualistic approaches to fashion further enhanced a lively scene. Also present was the elegant Terry Murray, looking fabulous in one of our black and turquoise ruffled-collar peplum jackets.  Ms. Murray, a successful plus sized model, is an image coach extraordinaire and her own best advertisement.

What could be better than an evening’s entertainment combining shopping (with discounts,) entertainment, fellowship and wine?!   The always hospitable Lynn Dell, resplendent in an orange silk shantung jacket and hat, spoke with everyone she could and was interested in all the ladies and what had brought them to our lovely boutique.

It was genuinely a “mahvelous” party. If you missed this one, be sure to make it a point to join us for the next.

Until then, feel free to view our album of candid photos from our fabulous fete! Should you prefer a taste of how it is like to be in the middle of the action, you’re definitely welcome to watch our video below:

Come See Our Sensational Valentine’s Windows!

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we at Off Broadway Boutique have decided to present a wondrous display that is pleasing to the eye and the soul. Designed with the love that symbolizes this holiday, we truly believe that you’ll love our windows. This is why it is our pleasure to introduce you to Sue Kreitzman – our friend, our customer, as well as a prolific cookbook author, lecturer, teacher, and television personality. Much to her surprise, she was seduced by Art in the second half of life. It was a coup de foudre, coming upon her “… violently, inadvertently…” Despite completely dissimilar backgrounds (Sue has no training, showed no early talent, and had, until ten years ago, “never so much as doodled,”) they’re enjoying a joyful, passionate, and productive relationship…the fruits of which we share in our windows this month.

Paintings and constructions of “powerful and colorful female figures, imagined goddesses, personal heroines, glimpsed strangers, and self portraits” line her walls, fill her shelves and obsess her imagination. Favorites include Eve, Josephine Baker, Frida Kahlo, Wonder Woman, Carmen Miranda, and Medusa, whom Sue feels got a bad rap living as a strong, singular and magical woman at a time ruled by men.

Her iconic “Memory Jugs” continue a tradition gong as far back as memorials to the dead created by African slaves of the deep South, and as differently motivated as a kind of three dimensional scrapbook female hobbyists would put together beginning in the Victorian era. Memorials were made by emptying the pockets of the deceased and embedding these small objects with others of a personal nature into a clay or putty covered jug. Decorative pieces would be fabricated by pressing on found objects-thimbles, marbles, bits of broken jewelry, buttons, toys…and then, sometimes, painted gold.

Sue’s indomitably cheerful and completely unique modern day interpretations of this genre are richly decorated with “fascinating and profound junk gleaned from charity shops, salvage yards, and flea markets.” Each is topped with a head or head and torso – from mannequin to doll or action figure- representing the essence of the character being saluted. Most of these are embellished as well. The work sings of her zeal. Its confidence, energy, and mythological presence galvanize emotion and tickle one’s spirit.

If you’re interested in commissioning or selling Sue’s work, do feel free to e-mail her with your inquiries. Should you want to learn more about her international Outsider Art Group, you can check out their official website for more details. Meanwhile, we invite you over to Off Broadway Boutique to get swept up in the enchantment of our amazing display this Valentine’s Day!
