The ‘Off Broadway’ Review: Jean Paul Gaultier – Haute Couture: Fall 09

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Since Couture Fashion Week recently wrapped up, I wanted to share ‘Off Broadway’s thoughts on some of the fabulous (and not-so-fabulous) collections and pieces.

And today, Jean Paul Gaultier!  On with the review!

Gaultier went full-on old Hollywood in his inspiration for this Couture collection.  Classic lines, flowing fabrics, and just the right amount of tough structure makes this collection positively surreal.  I could stare at this collection all day long, there’s just so much detail and beautiful craftsmanship in each piece.

The long-sleeved, floor-length blue dress with the gladiator-style corsetting has me absolutely smitten.

Grade: A

The ‘Off Broadway’ Review: Valentino – Haute Couture: Fall ‘09

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Since Couture Fashion Week recently wrapped up, I wanted to share ‘Off Broadway’s thoughts on some of the fabulous (and not-so-fabulous) collections and pieces.

And today,Valentino!  On with the review!

The pieces featured in Valentino’s Fall Couture show were all about ‘M’s: Mesh, Mini’s, and draMa!

The worksmanship on every piece is clearly visible, and the whole collection is cohesive, flowing, and visually stunning.  It’s just over-the-top enough to be couture, yet subdued enough to be recognized as fashion, all the while looking absolutely spectacular in every way.

With hemlines up-to-there and blankets worth of mesh, the collection is sexy, sumptuous, and all-around fabulous.

Grade: A

In the News Again, Darlings!

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Recently, our fabulous owner and head buyer, Lynn Dell, was up in beautiful Montreal for Montreal Fashion Week, and was asked her thoughts on a designer’s collection, Marie Saint Pierre.

Marie Saint Pierre put on a bravado performance in which fashion and art met function. In her signature style, the designer draped, pleated, folded, tucked, twirled, frilled, knotted and feathered fabric to create a timeless yet on-trend collection in mostly black, with some white, a few shots of teal, one dusty rose sweater and a lone print halter.

There were terrific dusters, in ribbed knits and jerseys, just the thing for our winter, embellished with those frills and what-knots. Everywhere you wanted it there was volume, as well as sleeve play as in a teal wool bolero with accordion folds from the elbows down.

Said Lynn Dell, a buyer from the shop Off Broadway in New York: “This show was by far the very best I’ve seen. It’s beautiful, it’s elegant, it’s for a woman, it’s not for a kid. It’s got style.” Later in the week, she confirmed that she had made an order for the collection.

And we did!  Read the full article here, darlings!

We Love the Eighties…

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

And so does Fashion Week! Most notably, Marc Jacobs, our favorite style compass dipped into the bottomless pool of eighties inspiration for Fall 2009. His collection hearkened back to New York’s “good old days,” a time when “getting dressed up was such a joy.” Many other designers have continued to adopt the trend, among them Chris Benz (neons), Preen  (body con dresses), Charles Anastase (acid wash jeans), and Donna Karan (power suits perfected!). Even Hamish Bowles is having acid flashbacks!

The club scene isn’t what it used to be, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t wrap yourself in gorgeously sparkling and studded fabrics and embrace the power shoulder silhouette of a brasher, bolder era. We could all use some of that bravado these days…

You could start with our very own collection, right here in the store!
