With the big day quickly approaching, the pair wanted to celebrate with an exquisite party for all of their close friends and family members.  Without hesitation, Lynn contacted the talented Chef Roblé Ali and his stylish sister, Jasmine, to cater and decorate her very special event.

Lynn’s unique sense of style and love for gourmet foods, combined with Sanford’s simple taste level, left Chef Roblé and his team with quite a challenge on their hands for their high-profile clients. Roblé and Jasmine put together a brilliant and glamorous party that represented the couple’s taste from the decorations to the three course meal that impressed all of the guests.

Chef Roble’s delicious cooking, alongside Jasmine’s creative eye for design, was able to create Lynn and Sandy’s dream 60^th Anniversary party, and a memorable event for life.  The grand ballroom was decorated with photos from Lynn and Sandy’s wedding day, while stunning mannequins were dressed in Lynn’s favorite Off Broadway Boutique  pieces. We can’t forget about the mouth-watering three course meal that consisted of chilled pea soup with lobster bits, steak for the main course, and yummy cheesecake for dessert. 

With every change of meal, Lynn changed outfits to keep her guests on the edge of their seats for what she’ll be wearing next and to represent the course being served, such as Off Broadway Boutique’s red silk jumpsuit being worn when steak was served. 

Chef Roblé and his team made a lasting impression on Lynn and Sandy and all of their guests by catering such an important event.  Lynn and Sanford highly recommend having Chef Roblé and his upbeat team to cater your next event!

One of the biggest misconceptions about fashion is the idea that it is something exclusive that can only be enjoyed by the elite. As you can see by the chic and fascinating people that I met during my time at Fashion Week, there is a collective love for fashion that makes up the fabric of New York’s originality. It is the same framework that I’ve presented and will continue to represent at Off Broadway Boutique for years to come.

The night was filled with glamour and class, in the form of inspirational women who aren’t afraid to express themselves with vibrant colors, one of a kind jewelry pieces, and flamboyant fashion. Every form of style – from vintage to contemporary modern – was displayed throughout!

Our very own Lynn Dell was honored with a stunning large framed photo that hung on the wall of the hotel, while she enjoyed a video screening along with Ari’s inspiring top models. As always, she created a plenty of commotion and attention as camera flashes went off. Her outfit consisted of a stunning hat that was recently was added to Off Broadway Boutique’s chic hat collection to complement her pearl jewelry by Kenneth Jay Lane.

The Off Broadway Boutique family – living it up with style!

Last Sunday, I was introduced to one of the newest best-kept secrets in New York State – Glenmere – by my wonderful brother-in-law, Irwin Cohen. Sensing that my husband, Sandy, and I needed a change of scenery, he, who is the spitting image of Sandy, recommended this country estate as a place to have brunch. So, we went along with him and his wife, Susan, as well as our driver, Jason, to what I’d soon discover as one of the greatest finds for over 50 women.

Sandy was very pleased with Irwin’s choice, as it reminded him of the first time that he’d visited Glenmere with his parents at age 15. Just as it gave them a beautiful day while putting the spark back in their marriage, this summer resort provided us with the backdrop to what was a beautiful brunch. Exceeding our expectations in every way, Glenmere is a wonderful place for women over 50 to sneak away for the weekend or take a breather from the hustle and bustle of the city. Secluded with the look of a European castle, it is less than 50 miles away from the city and a world away from worries.

As I enjoyed my brunch with my loved ones on the by the Glenmere lake near the estate, I felt just as glamorous and relaxed as I look in this photo below:

 

Hello, darlings!  I had the pleasure of attending a recent live taping of The View, the fabulous chat fest that I make sure to tune into every single day.  Since I’d received VIP tickets that I surely couldn’t have passed up, Yael joined me in what was sure to be a fantastic time!

And fantastic it was, since nothing compares to seeing it live and in color for the first time.  It was exciting to meet the ladies on the panel, as they were very gracious to the audience.  Barbara Walters was very nice when she’d spoken to us in the audience, while Sherri Shepherd paid me a fabulous compliment on my fashionable over 50 outfit from the stage.  After Yael presented her with our press kit, the pretty and young Elisabeth Hasselbeck chimed in to let me know that she definitely recognized beloved Off Broadway Boutique.  Though I was hoping to meet with Joy Behar, who I’ve known for years, she unfortunately hadn’t shown up in the audience.

Recently, our Countess of Glamour, Lynn Dell, was privileged enough to see the sensational new film, Bill Cunningham New York.  A tour-de-force documentary, it did a wonderful job in capturing the famed New York Times fashion photographer and editor of the weekly column, On the Street, as extremely talented while portraying his unassuming humility. 

Having had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cunningham a few times before, it was a treat for Lynn Dell to step into his world and see how he effortless convey the unique beauty of New York City style through his unbiased lens.  In turn, she highly recommends that every woman over 50 rushes to see this fantastic film.

Though Lynn Dell has been a busy bee lately with her attending countless fashion shows for women over 50 and designing glamorous ponchos for Off Broadway Boutique’s exclusive collection, she still found the time to take in the fabulous Broadway show, La Cage Aux Folles, the other night.  With Neisha Cohen, her West Coast BFF and the CEO of Prime Time Media, by her side, our Countess of Glamour had a ball in watching star, Harvey Fierstein, put on a show-stopping performance.  Hearing his stirring rendition of “I Am What I Am” solidified her opinion of him as a wonderful talent and artistic genius.

La Cagelles In Action!

Considering that Harvey’s breakout tune has been Lynn’s mantra for years, it was no surprise that she felt compelled to jump onstage during his number.  Though she’d settled for giving him and the rest of the cast a standing ovation at the end of the show, she and Neisha left the theatre while singing their praises. “If you want to feel so good that it seems as if you’re walking on air, you must go see La Cage Aux Folles,” our Countess of Glamour gushed.  The most important message of this Tony Award-winning musical is that it reminds the audience that the best of times is now!

Once in a while, we at Off Broadway Boutique like to spotlight a special client or friend that possesses our very spirit of dramatic flair.  This time, we are proud to present and highlight our very own sales associate and style siren, Brianna Hurley, for her incredible acting talent and her passion for the arts has transcended its way onto the stage!    Currently starring in Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell’s Off-Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera as Mama Valerius, she has been earning rave reviews for her “gleefully eccentric” portrayal.  According to Heather Violanti of Theatre Online, the lovely and talented actress “stops the show”.  In addition, Happen to like New York states that Brianna is largely responsible for the production picking up in the second half. “She is a true comedic actress who deserves great accolades for her work as that character. I previously saw her in Cinderella, and thought she was good, but it was nothing compared to this. If there were to be one stand out moment in the second act, that would be it for me,” echoes the esteemed theater website.

We at Off Broadway Boutique share those sentiments, when it comes to Brianna’s theatrical sense of style.  Inspired by the Countess of Glamour, Lynn Dell, she goes above and beyond to express her colorful personality in the form of her flamboyant sense of fashion.

The remarkable Deborah Newallo and her able musicians captivated those in attendance.  Recognizing one another as women of a certain sympathetic glamour, owner Lynn Dell and Deborah Newallo met as strangers and struck up a conversation.  Upon learning Deborah was an experienced jazz singer, Lynn enlisted her, unheard, for the party.  Class and presence would certainly manifest themselves in her musicianship. And they did.  Ms. Newallo stands just to the left of Billie Holiday, in the vicinity of Lee Wiley, yet very much in her own territory.  Her arrangements served her confident voice and the classic songs, her sidemen were top notch.  This was music worthy of a fine supper club.

Karen E. Seiger then signed copies of her terrific book: Markets of New York City: A Guide to the Best Artisan, Farmer, Food and Flea Markets, which features Off Broadway Boutique and is published by The Little Bookroom…as we participate in the 77^th and Columbus Flea Market on Sundays. You’re always welcome to visit us every Sunday.  A comprehensive and beautifully illustrated little volume, the book is indispensable for those of us full-figured women who love exploring when we shop.

Discount cards for the wine bar at the splendid new SD26 (contemporary Italian cuisine at 26^th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues) and for Seven’s Mediterranean Turkish Grill across the street from the shop, were offered to our guests.  Additionally, we offered entrance in a free raffle that featured prizes of lunches, dinners, teas, accessories and books.  All our fantastic fifty-plus winners will be notified.

Familiar faces mingled with new ones as we were happy to welcome Charlene Gianetti and the Women Around Town, as well as those who accompanied friends.  Maryann Van Dongen, Lina Piloplyte and Jenny Hirscowitz were instantly recognizable as denizens of Ari Cohen’s extremely fashionable web site, www.advancedstyle.blogspot.com. Their unique taste and individualistic approaches to fashion further enhanced a lively scene. Also present was the elegant Terry Murray, looking fabulous in one of our black and turquoise ruffled-collar peplum jackets.  Ms. Murray, a successful plus sized model, is an image coach extraordinaire and her own best advertisement.

What could be better than an evening’s entertainment combining shopping (with discounts,) entertainment, fellowship and wine?!   The always hospitable Lynn Dell, resplendent in an orange silk shantung jacket and hat, spoke with everyone she could and was interested in all the ladies and what had brought them to our lovely boutique.

It was genuinely a “mahvelous” party. If you missed this one, be sure to make it a point to join us for the next.

Ari first met Lynn on the streets of New York some time ago. After the Advanced Style article in The New York Times he was again put in touch with this fabulous woman, owner of “Off Broadway Boutique”, a store on the Upper West Side and a very glamorous location. Of course our curiosity was piqued by the store’s description, “a playground of style”, but it was Lynn’s passion for bringing out her customers’ inner movie star that had us spending all afternoon playing dress-up in a collection of over 40 years of new or vintage clothing and accessories.

When I walk into the shop on a sunny afternoon, Lynn is sitting in a full floor-length costume at a makeshift vanity in the center of the room. She turns her head with a huge smile and generous wave, somewhat like what she would have done in the days when she was a Rockette. (later, when we walked out into the street, she actually did a high kick, which I’m practicing according to her lesson).

She asks us to take a seat while she introduces her staff of over 20 years…

“Let’s show them… at 39 you can look sensational!”, she says with a wink.Her look is more pronounced with age, she says “I got more confident as I got older, and dared to wear more.”

A casual look is brightly colored pieces with “flou”, accessorized to the maximum. “If you can travel easily with it, it’s casual.”

Lynn says she personally doesn’t do casual… “We dress for the theater of our lives! Who wants to wear jeans?!”

I wanted to know what Lynn would say about luxury, since these days eveveryone is so fixed on defining it.

“You don’t need luxury to have style…accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative! Don’t be proud of fat, just dress for your body…. If I’m doing my thing, I’m wearing my easy knit pieces with gold and sequins any day of the year. But you won’t see me wearing a big straw hat inside.”

She is, however, taking kindly to wearing large framed sunglasses indoors.

Lynn first discovered how to be stylish watching movie stars like Lana Turner and Ginger Rogers on the silver screen. I asked her what items every woman should have as they mature and “advance” with style:

“A woman should just have MORE of everything… more lipstick, more hand cream, more clothes..”

What really resonates, though, is her insistence that without poise and good posture, a woman cannot look glamorous. It helps me believe this is the real deal when her husband makes a brief appearance, and tells me he prefers when she’s in “happy colors”. At which point we change into a brighter look…“Off Broadway Boutique” makes these flower petal hats especially for their customers (Roberta Flack walked in as we were chatting, and Elizabeth Taylor’s signed picture is on the wall)… Lynn prefers this look “for the Opera”.

Later on, she suggests we make a re-do of the jacket I am wearing, but in taffeta. Lynn is also a designer at heart.One of the best things we do together during this visit is try on all of Lynn’s favorite jewelry. She has pieces you’ve only seen in the movies mixed in with faceted lucite chokers (which she dresses me in over a nylon sack-like one-piece) and macramé chest plates (that are seriously chic, Rodarte style).

Lynn’s talent is not only in knowing what’s good for the right figure, its also in coordinating the right jewelry. I learn through trial and error (in the deco mirror) that large round drop earrings are not good with a turban, you’re better to stay close to the face with dramatic chunky studs.

“It’s a finished look…. Try walking into a room with a headpiece and not getting the attention you need.”

I also compliment Lynn on her amazing manicure, which appears to have a lifetime of nurturing…
